Tooth trouble? Tips for managing the dreaded toothache

Toothache can vary from a dull, niggling pain that comes and goes, to something that makes your head throb so much, you want to pull the tooth out yourself.

There are many reasons why you might have a toothache, and the most common causes are tooth decay, cavities, nerve irritation, infection, and worn fillings. When a toothache strikes, it’s important to visit your dentist as soon as possible to get the cause sorted out. However, if you can’t get to an appointment straight away, here are some tips on how to handle a toothache.

Rinse your mouth gently with warm water to remove any food from your teeth. This way you can see if there is anything obvious, such as a loose filling or chipped tooth that could be causing the pain. Cleaning the teeth will also remove some of the bacteria in your mouth, helping to prevent or slow any infection.

Over the counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen will help to reduce the severity of the toothache. Oral gels that contain benzocaine will also provide some temporary relief.

Clove oil has antibacterial and painkilling properties and it is a traditional, but effective, way to treat the symptoms of a toothache. Gently apply a little clove oil with a clean fingertip to the affected area to soothe the pain. You can also use whole cloves by first softening them in your mouth before holding next to the tooth for around 30 minutes.

Toothache that is not caused by sensitivity to hot or cold can benefit from an ice pack placed near the painful area. Always wrap the ice in a towel first.

If your toothache is caused by a lost filling, you can use over the counter dental cement to plug the hole until you can see your dentist. Larger chemists stock dental cement and this is a convenient way to help plug the hole ahead of seeing your dentist for a permanent fix.

If you can, lay down in a quiet room with the lights low. Try to relax and meditate, focusing on having a clear mind, rather than the pain.
Above all, regular visits to your dentist will also prevent future tooth problems. Regular dental check-ups allow your dental team to detect any issues before they become a problem. Whilst home remedies will provide some relief, arranging an appointment with your dentist as soon as you can is essential for the long-term health of your teeth and gums.

Toothache often has an underlying cause that requires professional treatment, and the quicker it is sorted out, the better.
